The Red Tag program is designed to prevent the use of defective gas appliances. Virginia Natural Gas shall send a report to the Department of Development and Permits, Code Compliance Division, indicating the location and cause of a defect. The Inspector will investigate the report or complaint and notify the property owner, in writing, of necessary corrections.
Once the red tag has been posted to the gas line, the gas service may be shut down until the repair is complete and verified by the Code Compliance Inspector. You must notify the Code Compliance Division at 757-382-6018 of any repairs completed to correct the defect on the "unsafe condition form". If the repair requires a gas permit, the "unsafe condition form" is not required once a gas permit is obtained.
If your gas has been disconnected a gas permit will be required to re-activate service.
