Medical (EMS)
By any number of measures, the Chesapeake Fire Department is recognized throughout Virginia for its exceptional EMS system. In addition to highly trained EMS providers, cutting edge equipment, integrated quality control, and extremely engaged medical direction, our agency has more recently been recognized throughout the country as a premiere fire-based EMS system.
American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold PLUS Award
From 2018 to 2021, the Chesapeake Fire Department was awarded the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold PLUS Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks. This is the fourth consecutive year in which our Department has been recognized for exceptional care of cardiovascular patients.
Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the deadliest type of heart attack caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it's critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible by mechanically opening the blocked vessel.
Who's Life Will You Save Today?
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths. It can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime. A man in the restaurant next door. A woman across the mall. You're CPR-trained and glad to help in an emergency. If only you knew about it. Now you will. Learn more about PulsePoint.
Learn Hands-Only CPR
Hands-Only CPR is the chest compression part of traditional CPR. If you do chest compressions until we get there, you will help give the victim their best chance at a good outcome.
