The Route 168 Chesapeake Expressway is a fast and convenient 16 mile long, four-lane divided highway linking Interstate 64 in Chesapeake to North Carolina and the Outer Banks.
For your convenience, the toll for the Chesapeake Expressway may be paid using cash or an E-ZPass transponder. Only vehicles with an E-ZPass transponder are authorized to use the Express Lane which is the far left lane and does not require stopping. The Chesapeake Expressway does not bill by plate.
E-ZPass transponders provide convenience and savings while traveling. Sign up in person at any E-ZPass service center location listed on the Virginia E-ZPass website. If you need a transponder for a passenger vehicle (two axles, four tires), you can purchase an "On the Go" transponder at local retailers or DMV offices. You MUST register your "On the Go" transponder with E-ZPass as soon as you get it. You can do so online at www.EZPassVA.com, by phone 1-877-762-7824 or at one of the E-ZPass service centers. Vehicles over 7000 pounds or 3+ axles must visit an E-ZPass service center or call E-ZPass directly (1-877-762-7824) to obtain an E-ZPass. For more information visit www.EZPassVA.com.
Frequent Chesapeake Expressway travelers can save money on tolls by signing up for the Chesapeake Expressway Discount Program. You must have a Virginia E-ZPass transponder and you must enroll separately in the Discount Program. E-ZPass and the Chesapeake Expressway Discount Program are two different programs that require separate enrollments. From the North ... Follow I-95 South to Richmond, VA. Take I-64 East toward Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA. Take I-64 or I-664 to Chesapeake, VA. From I-64, take Exit 291B to Route 168, the Chesapeake Expressway. Once in North Carolina, Route 168 turns into US-158 East.
From Virginia's Eastern Shore across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (Route 13) ... Follow Route 13, Northhampton Boulevard, to I-64 East (to Chesapeake), take Exit 291B to Route 168, the Chesapeake Expressway. Once in North Carolina, Route 168 turns into US-158 East.
If you ride a motorcycle on the Chesapeake Expressway, the cash toll is $1.00 ($3.00 during Peak Weekends). If you use an E-ZPass transponder coded for a motorcycle, the toll remains $1.00 ($3.00 during Peak Weekends). VA E-ZPass does not currently have a transponder specifically designed for motorcycles and warns that a transponder mounted on a motorcycle is used at the customer’s “own risk and liability”. It should be noted that motorcycles shall only use E-ZPass transponders registered for a motorcycle. It is against E-ZPass policy to use a transponder registered to an automobile for a motorcycle toll transaction. In addition, if you use a transponder registered to a 2-axle vehicle for a motorcycle transaction, you will be charged the 2-axle rate.
