There are currently over 25,000 street lights throughout the City with an annual operating cost of over $3.3 million. Most of the street lights are maintained by Dominion Energy.
Requesting a New Street Light
The City has a petition process for the installation of street lights in existing neighborhoods. Any citizen requesting a new street light will be sent a petition that requires 51% approval of the residents who would be directly affected by the new light. To request a new street light and petition, call the Customer Contact Center at 757-382-CITY (2489) or email the Traffic Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works.
Reporting a Street Light Outage
To report a street light outage, contact Dominion Energy or call 1-866-DOM-HELP. Note: The City of Chesapeake does not have access to Dominion Energy's work order system and cannot provide updates on street light repairs. Please contact Dominion Energy to report all street light outages or problems.
