Council & Mayoral Elections

  • The Mayor and City Council members are elected for four-year terms by the people in general Mayoral and Council elections.
  • The Council elections are held every two years, and the Mayoral elections are held every four years, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even-numbered years.
  • The terms of Council members and the Mayor begin on January 1, following their election, and continue for a term of four years.
  • The Council chooses, by majority vote, one of its members to be Vice-Mayor.
  • The Mayor presides over Council meetings and is recognized as the head of the City government for all ceremonial purposes.
  • The Vice-Mayor, in the absence of the Mayor, will perform the duties of the Mayor.
  • In the event the position of Mayor should become vacant, the Vice-Mayor shall assume all of the duties and powers of the Mayor until the next general election.
