CONFERENCE HONORS COMMUNITY LEADERS AND ADDRESSES BLIGHT

CHESAPEAKE Making Chesapeake safer and improving resident’s quality of life are just two of the ways leaders in Chesapeake are helping to improve the city. Three of these leaders will be honored on Friday, June 5, at the 2009 Chesapeake Neighborhood Conference held at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Greenbrier.

In addition to the Neighborhood Leadership Awards, two Neighborhood Enhancement Grants will be given, volunteers recognized, and a forum on how to end crime and blight in Chesapeake neighborhoods will be held.

The event begins at 9:00 a.m. with the Anti-Blight Symposium, which will review new state laws and public and private resources to counter blight. Speakers from the City of Chesapeake, the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the private sector will cover a variety of topic areas.

The awards program begins at noon with a luncheon. After lunch, two groups working to involve residents of the Campostella area in crime prevention will receive Neighborhood Enhancement Grants. Heart of Compassion Partnerships, which seeks to reduce gang involvement, will receive a $7,000 Neighborhood Quality of Life Matching Grant for its urban outreach center. A second matching grant in the amount of $12,300 will be presented to Youth Entertainment Studios (YES) for its “YES/End Gangs” project.

The program ends with honoring the recipients of the 2009 Neighborhood Leadership Award: Rev. Jake Manley of Bethany Baptist Church; Kenneth Martin, Coordinator/President of the South Norfolk Neighborhood Watch; and “Serve The City – Chesapeake,” a group of churches working with the Police Department and within their community to serve and give hope by meeting needs in struggling neighborhoods. Additional information about the award recipients is attached (e-mail version only).
