CHESAPEAKE WATER CUSTOMERS SERVED BY PORTSMOUTH EXPERIENCE WATER DISCOLORATION
CHESAPEAKE - Chesapeake water customers that receive water from the City of Portsmouth water distribution system may be experiencing some discoloration of their water. The cause of this discoloration stems from a manganese intrusion at the Portsmouth Water Treatment Plant as result from the recent flooding associated with Hurricane Floyd.
Generally, affected areas include Deep Creek (north of Military Highway, e.g., Camelot, Brentwood, Cavalier Industrial Park), Western Branch, and the Airline Boulevard and Joliff Road areas.
Portsmouth utility officials are treating the problem and the water is beginning to clear. The discoloration poses no threat to health. However, Portsmouth utility officials recommend that citizens not wash white clothes in the discolored water.
Residents may call the Portsmouth Utilities Department at 393-8524 or the Chesapeake Public Utilities Department at 382-6352 for more information.
