CHESAPEAKE STAGES SECOND ANNUAL NATIVE AMERICAN FESTIVAL
The 2nd Annual Native American Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 29 - 30, at the Chesapeake City Park. Approximately 500 school children will attend the event on Friday, May 29, at 9:00 a.m. for the school day segment.
Festival organizers are expecting tribes from throughout Hampton Roads and the state to participate in this year's celebration. Several demonstrations have been planned including the making of primitive tools, wampum jewelry and belts, crafts and weapons. Native Americans will also perform traditional dancing and flute playing.
Highlights of the second annual event include a Native American silver smith, who will demonstrate his craft and repair or create silver jewelry for the public, storyteller, Edith Whitefeather Kuhns, the Young Blood Singers and Thom Littlebear, who will serve as this year's master of ceremonies.
Additionally, the grand entry of tribal chiefs and leaders will take place on both days. Aztec dancers have been added this year. Aztec natives have similar customs, traditions and beliefs as Native Americans.
Activities begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 30. Chesapeake City Park is located off Greenbrier Parkway. For more information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 382-6411.
