Public Works Department - Stormwater Management

Public Education

As part of the City's permit with the Commonwealth to manage stormwater, Public Works maintains a public education program to provide information and help educate citizens on stormwater related issues.

This is achieved by producing and distributing information brochures and pamphlets, developing displays for public events, advertising in local media, and offering special in-person presentations to schools, community groups, and civic organizations.

The goal of the Public Education Campaign is to raise public awareness of the effects of stormwater pollution and to change behaviors and practices that create problems in stormwater.

Because Stormwater pollution affects all of Hampton Roads, a regional committee was formed to pool resources and work collectively to enhance the public's understanding of stormwater runoff. Representatives of the region's major municipalities serve HR Storm (HRPDC Stormwater Education Program), part of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission's Environmental Division.

To arrange for a speaker to discuss Stormwater Pollution, you may contact the Public Works Information Specialist at 382-6983. Brochures and information are also available.

If your group or school would like a visit from the "Soil Team" call the Public Information Specialist at (757) 382-6983 to coordinate.
