Public Works Department - Stormwater Management
Pipe & Ditch Maintenance
The Stormwater Management Division maintains public ditches and drainage pipes throughout the City. Private drainage systems are the responsibility of the property owner.
When a ditch or drainage pipe is clogged, contact the Chesapeake Customer Contact Center at 382-CITY(2489).
Public Works crews will cut vegetation, and remove debris and sediment that accumulates in publicly owned ditches. Property owners are expected to keep vegetation cut in the ditches on private property.
City stormwater crews can flush sediment from clogged drainage pipes. A vacuum truck is used to pump high-pressure water through the pipe. For difficult clogs, a rodding machine is used to force an opening through accumulated sediment.
Residents are reminded that it is illegal to dump leaves, grass clippings and debris into drainage systems. Ditches should never be burned or sprayed with defoliants. Vegetation in ditches provides stability to the banks and natural filtration of stormwater.
