Public Works Department - Services
Mowing
Public Works maintains the mowing of public rights of
way along City roadsides, shoulders and medians. Chesapeake
is responsible for 720 shoulder-miles of mowing along
roadways and for 320 acres of medians and open areas.
The City's mowing contracts on rights of way and roadsides
have changed from previous years. In order to provide
the best service and reduce problems, Public Works sectioned
the City into seven mowing zones. This contract allows
for roadway medians to be mowed every two weeks, and roadsides
and rights of way every four weeks. The back slopes of
roadside drainage ditches will be cut twice per mowing
season.
Interstate roads and on/off ramps are maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Mowing of City park grounds and public building grounds is handled by the Building and Grounds Division of our Parks and Recreation Department.
