Public Works Department - Chesapeake Expressway
Violation Enforcement

The Chesapeake Expressway has the latest technology on Violation Enforcement. This system captures a digital image of the rear license plate of all vehicles that fail to pay the toll. This image is then verified by a Violation Enforcement Officer and ultimately approved for processing by a Supervisor. Information on the registered owner is then retrieved via the Department of Motor Vehicles. A violation notice is then generated by the system and mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle in question. This first notice includes a picture of the license plate in question as well as the amount of Toll Due and an administrative fee of $5.00. Failure to pay this notice within the time frame indicated on the notice will result in a Summons issued by the Court to the registered owner of the vehicle. This Summons may result in a fine of $25.00 for the first offense and $50.00 for subsequent offenses. To process an appeal, follow the directions on the notice and return within the specified time frame. Once a Summons has been generated, payment and appeals are not possible. You are then required to appear in court on the date/time indicated on the Summons.
Smart Tag users who receive a violation notice, and whose account(s) are in good standings at the time/date of the violation are to contact the Expressway at (757)204-0010 immediately. This will ensure further violations and costs are not incurred. If you have any questions, please contact the Expressway at the number listed above.
Pending legislation by the Virginia General Assembly may affect current policies and procedures for processing violations.
