The City Engineer
Mr. Eric Martin is the City Engineer of the Chesapeake Public Works Department and is responsible for over 100 employees in the Engineering Division with an annual operating budget of over $6 million. The Engineering Division provides professional engineering design, traffic engineering, real estate, surveying and construction management and inspection services on all Public Works and development projects within the City, as well as coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation on State highway projects affecting the City.
In addition, Mr. Martin oversees the review of subdivision and site plan process, environmental issues relating to construction and integration of the Geographic Information Services (GIS) into the Division’s operational activities.
He has held the position of City Engineer since 2000 and previously served as Assistant City Engineer for Chesapeake. Prior to joining Chesapeake, Mr. Martin was the Assistant City Engineer of Hampton, Virginia for more than eight years.
Mr. Martin also gained extensive engineering and construction experience as a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1983 to 1990. He continues to be an active member of the Air Force Reserve currently assigned to Head Quarters Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base.
He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University and a master’s degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University in 1990. His professional affiliations include: registered professional engineer in Virginia, a member of the America Society of Civil Engineers and the American Public Works Association.
