Parks & Recreation Department - Notable Yards 2008

DEEP CREEK. Bonnie and Michael O’Neill. 1212 Shore Road.

Bonnie and Michael O’Neill’s corner lot is beautifully edged, has a lawn that looks like carpet, and a diverse and healthy selection of plants and trees.

“Bonnie takes great pride in our yard,” said her husband Michael.  “She does all of the yard work, from cutting grass to digging the pond in the backyard.  I am very proud of what she has accomplished.”

The backyard landscape is soft and comfortable because of its circular design .  “I wanted to create an outdoor room,” said Bonnie.  “I just love to work in the garden.  We’ve lived here for six years, and we have renovated both the inside of the house and the landscape.”

The yard is a colorful mix of plants and trees, including Japanese maple, crape myrtle, liariape, vibernum, roses, sedum, creeping flox, pineapple guava, daylilies, and much more.  Birdfeeders and bird baths attract birds to the yard.  A beautiful pond is filled with fish.

“I dug the pond, and Michael helped me with the liner,” said Bonnie.  “Now I want to concentrate on evergreen groundcover to cut down on the amount of mulch that we use.”

The couple solved the problem of how to plant a long, narrow side yard by filling it with colorful plants. Bill installed a wide, decorative brick border that can be used as a narrow walkway.
