Parks & Recreation Department - Notable Yards 2006

OSCAR SMITH. James and Irene Allen. 240 Dexter Street.

James and Irene Allen were nominated for the award by their neighbor who lives across the street.  Once a week Irene goes to ceramics class at the Johnson Park Ceramic Center.  Her crafts are found throughout the garden—a classical cherub stand for a gazing ball, beautifully glazed pots, a sun plaque on a trellis, and many other pieces.

“I try to work in the garden early in the morning before it gets too hot,” said Irene.  Plants in their garden are old-fashioned, with just a touch of “spice” and “sassiness”.  Plantings include large elephant ears, 4 o’clocks, petunias, hibiscus, pansies, and numerous perennials.  Tomato plants are tucked into the flower gardens.  They have a compost pile.
