Parks & Recreation Department - Notable Yards 2006

HICKORY. Sindy and Jack Clifton. 2932 Ballahack Road.

Jack and Sindy Clifton also won in 2005.  However, they have made so many improvements to their yard that it is like a new area.

The couple added a massive water garden with a waterfall.  Designed by Jack, the pond design includes many Asian touches, which reflects the couple’s love of travel and learning.  They recently returned from a trip to China. A fence that runs near the pond looks like a wall, with an Oriental red door. “We are working with an artist who will do paintings that look like a reflection of the pond and will be placed in the windows of the wall,” said Sindy.

“One thing we’ve learned is that we have to mass plants for an impact in our yard,” said Sindy. “We feel like we’re totally in balance with nature.” Their yard is filled with masses of plants that attract hummingbirds, dragon flies, and butterflies. Decorative yard art and statuary is tastefully tucked throughout the garden.  Plantings include flox, hostas, irises, daylilies, and wax myrtle. They left as many large trees as possible when they originally cleared their lot.

The couple work together in real estate and enjoy working together in their yard.  “Our next project will be a rock garden in our front yard,” said Sindy.
