Residents within the City of Chesapeake have a unique program available to assist them during an emergency. The Special Cares And Needs (S.C.A.N.) program is available free of charge and is provided through our City's computer-aided dispatch system.
Do you, or someone living in your home, take medications or require special medical care in the event of an emergency?
If your answer is YES, then S.C.A.N. was designed for you!
When you dial 9-1-1 to report an emergency, a dispatcher answers your call.
The dispatched notes the nature of the call, then assigns the appropriate
emergency equipment to respond. The information you provide is sent via computer
to the emergency personnel responding to your location.
Your completing and returning the attached form provides emergency personnel with vital pre-arrival information should a medical emergency arise. All information you submit is kept strictly confidential. More importantly, this valuable insight can save precious time during an emergency.
The information can be about you or a loved one who needs special care, has a long term illness, mental or physical handicap, or who uses specialized medical equipment. Other examples are listed below:
- Medical Diseases (Diabetes, Seizures, etc.)
- Infant on Apnea Monitor
- Heart or Stroke Patients
- Bedridden Patients
- Allergic Conditions
- Geriatric Patients
- Physically or Mentally Challenged
- Special Orders from the Doctor (DNR)
If more than one person in your home would benefit from this program, you are asked to fill out a separate form for each person. Renew the application each year or whenever changes are made to keep the information current.
- This program does not apply to Extended Care Facilities!
