Fire Department
Technical Rescue Team
The Chesapeake Technical Rescue Team was
officially established in 1998 and placed in Station 2 "Portlock". The team
consists of the Ladder Company, Engine Company, and Medic. At this time the
main concentration is Vehicle & Rope Rescue. Issues being looked at include
Confined Space Rescue and Structural Collapse. Many of the members are part
of the Tidewater Regional Technical Rescue Team and local FEMA team VA-TF2.

The Tidewater Regional Technical Rescue Team "TRTRT" is a specialized rescue
organization serving Southeastern Virginia. Highly trained firefighters and
rescue personnel from the Tidewater cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia
Beach and Franklin and the Norfolk Naval Base and Little Creek Amphibious Base
participate as team members.
In 1986, the TRTRT was extablished as an operational
element of the Tidewater Emergency Medical Services Council, Inc. The Medical
Director of the Council provides medical direction for team personnel including
Advanced Life Support care. Personnel costs are absorbed by the jurisdictions
from which team members operate, while operational costs are funded by regional
utilities, building contractors, professional and community organizations.
All team members are certified in Heavy and Tactical Rescue techniques. Minimally, they are state certified EMTs, although a majority are also nationally registered paramedics. Team members are also required to participate in additional ongoing advanced theory and rescue techniques.
The team responds
to incidents requiring the use of specialized
equipment. Currently, the team is trained
for and capable of delivering services
involving rope and vehicle rescue. The
team is preparing for delivering collapse
and confined space rescue. The team is
capable of providing resources and expertise
at the scene of an incident when local
resources are inadequate or unavailable.
Many of the members are on the local FEMA US&R (Urban Search & Rescue) team. VA-TF2 which is based out of Virginia Beach. The team has been deployed to assist with both Search and Recovery after the Oklahoma City Bombing, Hurricane Opal hit Florida, and stood by in Atlanta for the Olyimpics.
