Arts Education Grants
The AEG Student Qualifying Performances are held in the month of FEBRUARY and are open to Chesapeake students in the 7th grade to freshman year in college. Students may participate in the Qualifying Performances for a grant award in a variety of arts disciplines. Acceptance of applications begins in mid-October and closes the second week of January.

Doris Sahr Memorial Piano Grants
Held at the same time as the Arts Education Grants Qualifying Performances, Chesapeake piano students perform for piano grant awards and trophies in two categories: Division I- ages 9-10 and Division II- ages 11-12. Acceptance of applications begins in mid-October and closes the second week of January.

Healing Arts
June is “Healing Arts“ month at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Artworks presented are the result of using art as a means of coping with serious illness or disabilities, and exemplifies the healing value of the arts. The Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center will present the “HEALING ARTS” exhibit in the lobby of the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, 736 Battlefield Blvd. North, Chesapeake. This event is FREE and open to the public.
"Under the Stars" Performance Series at the Bagley
In 2004, the Fine Arts Commission launched an inaugural Under the Stars performance series to showcase the Robert G. “Buddy” Bagley stage at City Park, 900 Greenbrier Pkwy, which was funded in part by a $50,000 Beazley Foundation grant; the result of a proposal that was prepared and submitted by the Fine Arts Coordinator and the Fine Arts Commission.
WCTV "That Other Show"

The Arts Coordinator co-hosts a lively television show on Chesapeake's local cable television channel, WCTV

City Court Student Art Gallery
The Fine Arts Commission host and assist in judging the annual “Student Art Gallery” at the City Courts Complex, a program launched a few years ago at the request of Chief Judge, V. Thomas Forehand. This program annually provides important recognition for student artists and also, through the prize/purchase program, places student work permanently in the growing public collection at the Courts Complex.
Public Arts Program
The revitalized and on-going Public Art Program has been able to provide the city of Chesapeake with an interesting and varied display of Public Art in 2007-2008. The “Butterfly” mural on the outside wall of the Portlock Gallery in SoNo, the carved wood large mouth bass at Oak Grove Lake Park, the carved wood “Hickory Hawk” for Hickory High School, several lovely bronze sculptures and other painted works of art are on display in city hall and various libraries, as well as stone chess/checkers tables and chairs situated outside City Hall, Chesapeake campus of TCC and Great Bridge Locks Park.
Americans for the Arts
The Commission is a member and participates annually at the “Americans For the Arts” annual national conference as well as other times of the year. Americans For the Arts is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America. They hold a 40 year record of service with offices in Washington D.C. and New York.
