Commissioner of Revenue - Real Estate Tax Relief for Disabled or Senior Citizens
MESSAGE FROM RAY A. CONNER
COMMISSIONER OF THE REVENUE:
I hope that this information will help answer the basic questions you might have about real estate tax relief. The City of Chesapeake is to be commended for establishing a very generous program for its disabled and/or senior citizens. In 2007, over 3,000 citizens took advantage of this local program and over $2.2 million dollars in real estate taxes were forever relieved.
Our real estate tax relief program is not a welfare program. It is simply a way in which the City of Chesapeake can help defray living expenses for those qualifying disabled or senior citizen homeowners who have given so much to our community over the years.
If you feel that you meet the basic eligibility requirements of our program, please call us at 382-6698 or 382-6734 to set up a convenient appointment. In addition to the main office located at City Hall, applications can be filed at the Deep Creek, South Norfolk and Western Branch satellite offices, but only on specified dates. PLEASE CALL 382-6698 OR 382-6734 FOR THE DATES APPLICATIONS WILL BE TAKEN AT THESE THREE SATELLITE OFFICES. We are happy to explain to you which documents and information will be necessary to easily complete the application process. By scheduling an appointment, it will save you time and make for more efficient use of our staff.
State and local taxes can sometimes be confusing, so please let us know if we can ever be of assistance to you. Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to serving you.
Ray A. Conner
Commissioner of the Revenue
City of Chesapeake, Virginia
