The act is the primary state law governing citizen access to records of public entities and to their meetings.
- How long has the act been in effect?
(ref: 1968 Va. Acts, Ch. 479; 1989 Va. Acts, Ch. 358; 1999 Va. Acts, chs. 703 and 726; 2001 Va. Acts, Ch. 844) -
The General Assembly first adopted the act in 1968. Almost every year the Assembly makes minor amendments. Major revisions occurred in 1989 and 1999. The sections of the act were renumbered as part of a general recodification of Title 2.1 of the Virginia Code in 2001.
