Chesapeake Council On Youth Services (CCOYS)

The CCOYS is an interagency and multidisciplinary council of nearly 70 organizations serving Chesapeake youth and their families.  CCOYS was created in 1987 by the Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC).   CCOYS is part of a comprehensive network of systems serving youth and families in Chesapeake, and is coordinated through the Office of Youth Services(OYS).

CCOYS meets on odd months of the year in the Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court main training room.

Chesapeake Council On Youth Services (CCOYS), Youth Advisory Board (YAB)

The YAB gives youth the opportunity to share their input and concerns with agencies who serve youth.  This committee serves in an advisory capacity to the CCOYS regarding youth issues.  The involvement of the CCOYS YAB ensures that CCOYS is not only working for youth, but with youth.

The YAB partakes in many community projects, i.e., creating a Thanksgiving basket, to donate to a Chesapeake family; assisting the Salvation Army at the Christmas Depot during the holiday; making Valentine treat bags for children at St. Jude’s Hospital; assisting with the Mayor’s Cup T-Ball Classic and Homeless Point-In-Time count.

The committee meeets monthly at Chesapeake’s Regional Medical Center, Lifestyles Fitness Center.

Chesapeake Youth Committee

The Chesapeake Youth Committee (CYC) was established by the Mayor in 1981 to improve services to youth in Chesapeake.  The Committee has a membership of 17 City Council appointed residents with an interest or experience in youth and related issues.  The CYC is part of a comprehensive network of systems serving youth and families in Chesapeake, and is coordinated through the Office of Youth Services (OYS).  The mission of the CYC is to improve the well-being of youth and families in the Chesapeake community.

Important goals of the Committee are: to promote the coordination of services and programs among youth and family service providers to maximize the use of community resources; enhance the delivery of services and programs to youth and families by identifying gaps and duplication of services; provide a mechanism to centralize resources, disseminate information and educate families and professionals about community resources; promote and support activities to strengthen families and support the positive development of youth.

The CYC meets on even months of the year (with the exception of the month of August) in the City Council Executive Board Conference Room behind the City Council Chamber in the City Hall building.

Mayor’s Task Force for the Prevention of Gangs

The purpose of the Task Force is to inform and educate the community about potential gang-related problems and to identify and recommend actions and strategies to prevent gang activities.   The Task Force works together with Chesapeake community leaders and City staff to ensure that the City remains one of the safest in the country.

The Task Force meets monthly.
