Drainage and Transportation Project Highlights

Butts Station Road / Kemp Woods Outfall Drainage Basin

Drainage Project - photographThe work under this Project consists of channel improvements downstream from Butts Station Road, identified under a master drainage study.

The project will improve the drainage facility that runs from Butts Station Road southward behind the Greystone subdivision.  The project is being undertaken to alleviate flooding in the northern portion of the watershed which covers a total area of approximately 1500 acres. Some of the affected communities include Kemp Woods, Kemp Crossing, and Norcova Estates. The improvements will consist of widening the channel for approximately 1070' by building a 12’ wide bench (or flat area) along the east side of the existing ditch.

Long Bridge Replacement Project

Long Bridge - Before Project Start - photograph
  • The project includes construction of a 4-lane wide, 3 span pre-stressed concrete slab replacement bridge, widening and reconstruction of approximately 881 lineal feet of approach roadway; associated water main and drainage adjustments; and demolition of existing bridge. The project will be constructed in stages to maintain 2-way traffic on the highway at all times.
  • All overhead utilities including power and communications will be placed underground to the West side of the HRSD main
  • There are 2 waterlines on the east side of the bridge. One will remain in place; it is buried and will remain in the creek. The other will be relocated on the bridge.

Money Point Drainage Improvement Project

Money Point Drainage ImprovementsThe drainage deficiencies have been a long standing issue in the Money Point area. This project will create a typical street scenario with curb and gutter which addresses the surface drainage. The project will also install a drainage pipe in conjunction with the curb and gutter to transport the stormwater runoff to a new outfall to the Elizabeth River. The current project limits are for the areas along Freeman Avenue from Shannon Street to Wilcox Street. Drainage improvements also include creating the new outfall along Shannon Street to a ditch which ties into the Elizabeth River.

Washington Drive Drainage Improvement Project

Washington Drive Drainage Improvement ProjectRoadside drainage improvements will be provided from 300’ east of E Street to 300’ west of Unicorn Trail.  The work along this portion of Washington Drive will be performed within the existing 50’ right-of-way.  The following improvements will be made to the area:

  • The ditches adjacent to the pavement will be filled, providing a four foot to five foot roadside shoulder.
  • New ditches will be graded from the new shoulder to the right-of-way line.
  • The north side will drain to several cross pipes connecting to the drainage trunk line along the south side.
  • Disturbed concrete and asphalt entrances will be replaced with concrete entrances.
  • Most of the trees and shrubs within the right-of-way will be removed.
  • The proposed 36” outfall pipe will follow the Dominion Virginia Power right-of-way and spill into Herring Ditch, 700’ west of Washington Drive.
