Preserving the Memories of the
Oscar Smith Community

March 11, 2009

Dear Community Members:

As you may be aware, the Oscar Smith Middle School complex that has been a part of the community of Chesapeake since 1954 is being replaced with a new school that will be completed by the summer of this year. The current building, which was formerly Oscar Smith High School, has held a lot of special memories for students and staff alike over the past 55 years. In preparation of the tearing down of the older building, the Oscar Smith Middle School students and staff have been working steadily throughout the school year to produce a book of memories. This book, entitled Smith Pride: 55 Years of Tiger Tales, will be a compilation of memorable moments of former as well as current students and staff members. Our students have been busy producing interview questions, conducting interviews, and are currently writing the final copy that will be included in this book.

Oscar Smith Middle School - photographThe production of this book has been an enormous project and has done a lot to showcase our students and their talents. Their excitement over the community members they have interviewed, the artwork they have created for each chapter, and the writing they have produced can be felt all over the school. As the time fast approaches to take their work and turn it into the final product, we have to acknowledge that we have had a lot of support already from community members to see this book come to fruition.

However, we would like to ask for your assistance in getting the word out regarding one final fundraising project we are working on to assist with the printing of the book. Local artist Mark Carey has generously donated numbered and signed prints of Oscar Smith High School on Rodger Street and Lakeside Park in South Norfolk for us to sell. Proceeds from the sale of these prints will go toward our book production fund. Enclosed you will find a flyer that relates pricing and size information. If you could share this flyer with your community members we would greatly appreciate it as it is not only a fundraising endeavor for us, but also a way for community members to include a wonderful piece of artwork and South Norfolk history into their personal collections.

We thank you for your assistance in getting the word out regarding these prints and would like to extend an invitation to all to our Book Launch and Final Tour of the Old Building which is to be held on May 28, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. at Oscar Smith Middle School.

Sincerely,

Linda Scott, Ed.D.
