Chesapeake Named a "Smarter City" by IBM

eco-friendly Economic Development building - photoChesapeake has been recognized as a "Smarter City" by IBM for its use of technology to serve citizens. Nearly 40 city leaders, council members, and area business leaders attended the Smarter Cities - City of Chesapeake - Summit for Industry leaders. The event, hosted at the City's newly opened eco-friendly Economic Development Department, included presentations by IBM Regional Executive Dom Cottone, Chesapeake Mayor Alan P. Krasnoff, City Manager William Harrell and CIO Peter Wallace, who spoke at length about the technology priorities for Chesapeake and how IBM Maximo software is helping improve the lives and safety of its over 200,000 residents.

Battlefield Blvd/I-64 Interchange Project

VDOT's three-year project to replace the Battlefield Boulevard / I-64 interchange will widen two miles of I-64 and replace the Battlefield bridge over the interstate. Target date for completion is 7/31/09.

Maersk Impact

Portsmouth International Terminal

Maersk is building a marine terminal in Portsmouth to bring goods into the United States and distribute them throughout the east. The terminal will generate road and rail traffic in the surrounding areas. A portion of the rail traffic will move through the Western Branch area of Chesapeake over a Commonwealth Railroad line.
